Summer Term Newsletter 9
17th June 2005
Open Day
Our Open Day this year will be held on Thursday 7th July at the following times:
1.30 p.m. – 3.15 p.m.
&
6.00 p.m. – 7.30 p.m.
We invite all our current parents into the school to look at the work the children have produced and in particular to look at your own child’s work. The children are encouraged to show their own parents around the school as classes will not be in session.
You will have received your child’s annual written report earlier in the week and there may be points you would like clarified by the Class Teacher. Teachers will be available in each class to talk to parents and other visitors. There will, however, be no appointment system.
As this is also an open invitation for prospective parents, please do advertise this date with anyone you know who might be interested.
School Closure
Just a reminder that Friday 22nd July will be an Inset day and that school will finish at 1.30 p.m. on Thursday 21st July.
Little Berries
Little Berries will be open from from 1.30 p.m. on Thursday 21st July.
Year 5/6 Garden
Mrs Boulnois has planned and designed an outside classroom/garden for the Year 5 and 6 children. The area that is being developed is the grassed area, adjacent to the car park and the Year 5/6 classrooms.
If you and your child could come and join in the digging, planting and raking on 25th June, Mrs Boulnois would very much appreciate the help.
Cycling Proficiency
This is the last chance for Year 6 children to take the Cycling Proficiency test this term.
Letters have been given to all children who did not take the test earlier or those that need to retake. Please could all responses be handed to Mrs Boulnois by Monday 20th June. Test week will be 27th June – 1st July.
Boys’ Hair
I have been asked to clarify the position about boys’ hairstyles. We do not encourage boys to sculpt their hair so that it sticks up. This has been explained to the children in assembly.
Geography Week – Passport to the World
On 1st July, we will be celebrating the work that the children have done in Geography week. We have called this day – Passport to the World. The children will be put into mixed age groups and will be touring the school visiting a range of countries and learning a little bit about each one.
We have asked the children to dress as if they are going on holiday for this day. We would however, ask that they do not wear baseball caps or hoodies with their hoods up!!
Parents’ Questionnaire
We have enclosed a questionnaire with this newsletter and would be grateful if you could complete and return it by Friday 24th June.
Meridian TV
Please look out for some of our Year 2 children who will appear on âÃúMeridian TonightâÃù on Friday 17th June at 6.00 p.m. They were filmed on Wednesday talking about Father’s Day.
Poem on Bullying
The Light at the end of the tunnel
There is a light at the end
the end of the tunnel
but with every day
but with every step
the light at the end
becomes dimmer
This is going out to everyone
it spreads like a disease
but you see
not one was born to suffer
no one is meant to suffer
Bullying it’s a way
but not the right way
By Shayne Yates – 6M

Many thanks to the PTA for their superb organisation of the Summer Fair and the many hours they gave up to help it run so smoothly. Special thanks to Elaine Allen, Emma Parker and Helen Legge for leading the team!

The Computer for Schools promotion by Tesco has now finished. If you have any outstanding computer tokens please send them in with your child.
Guildford Borough Council Summer Activities and Events for Local Children
If you are interested to know about any activities and events in the summer holidays, the school office has âÃúSummer Holiday Fun leafletsâÃù compiled by Cultural Services at Guildford Borough Council.
Children in Cars
We have had comments from concerned parents that a number of people are leaving small infants unattended in parked cars whilst collecting children from Holly Lodge. This is obviously a safety risk to small children and one that the school would like to highlight.

Switch onto ‘IT’ for Schools
The Learning and Skills Council, Surrey, have been running small computer classes at Holly Lodge over the last year every Tuesday at 3.30 until 5.30, term time only in the Jubilee Room. They offer free computer lessons to parents or carers of children at Holly Lodge School. In turn we receive an allowance each year to purchase computer equipment for the school. To continue running this course at Holly Lodge we need more people to attend – if you are interested or would like any more information, please see the School Office.
School Dinner Money
As we are nearing the end of the school year, Surrey County Council asks that parents settle all outstanding dinner money. If you wish to know the balance of any money owing, please see the School Office.
